The Dance Wave

The Music

The music is carefully selected to create a magical, high frequency journey.   The format usually will follow a flow similar to a wave with a slow start, building up to a climax and then slowing down again to end with stillness and silence.  The journey includes elements of the earth (grounding), water (fluidity), fire (passion) and the sky (expansion).

The music is mostly international electronic dance music. There are some lyrics, but not a lot.

Each dance is unique, with different music, people and energy.   The more often it is practiced, the freer the dance becomes and the deeper the stillness.

The Wave

The music mostly follows a “Wave journey” inspired by Gabrielle Roth’s 5 rhythms, which starts with flowing, moves to staccato, into chaos, lyrical and ending in stillness.

Flow is associated with grounding and the emotion to move through is inertia or fear.  Staccato is associated with expression and the emotion to move through is anger and boundaries.   Chaos is associated with release and the emotion to go through is sadness.  Lyrical is associated with surrender and the emotion expressed and felt is joy.  Finally, Stillness is associated with emptiness and is felt as inner silence while still moving slowly.

All these 5 stages happen automatically with the guidance of the music and the natural rhythms of our body.  These stages easily move us through the various emotions with the opportunity to express and allow whatever comes up, within a loving, supportive and conscious container.  Each experience is unique and may or may not follow this cycle… which is used as a guide only.

Free Form

Free form conscious dance means

  • Aware of body and space around body, aware of others in the space
  • Listening to the body and allowing it to move as it feels to move
  • Aware of the breath and allowing deep breaths to help move the energy
  • There is no one to follow in the movement.  We just keep coming back to our breath, to the present moment, finding ourselves and our truth and expressing it.

The dance really helps with body awareness and beyond body with Self-awareness. Thus, we are not in our heads, thinking, but easily fall into our own rhythm and being.

There is an opening circle to introduce the dance, guidelines and intention, with a short meditation.   At the end there is a closing circle, with optional sharing, and any community announcements.

General Guidelines

  • Non-conversation space, we may make sounds as part of our dance, cell phones off, personal items out of the way.

  • Non-judgement or expectations on how to be or dance

  • No intoxicants.  Being present and clear.

  • No shoes.  May be barefoot or wear socks.

  • Safety/spatial awareness. Non-verbal permission to touch/dance with/enter someone’s space. We remain rooted in our own body with self-awareness, whether we dance alone or with others.

  • Encourage authenticity and responsibility for your impact within community. This is both an individual and collectively created wave.

Every single person is welcome, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, political belief, disability, or anything else.   Because the focus is on knowing who we truly are beyond form, we will put all our outer differences aside, and leave differences of opinion outside this dance meditation space.

The energy and joy of people dancing in the same space with respect, acceptance and freedom is amazing!
